Samson In Other Cultures

The story of Samson is perhaps one of the best known stories in the Bible. The feats of strengths that he showed as he fought against the Philistines imbued with the strength of God are well known all over the world. The shaving of his hair by his beloved Delilah and his subsequent lack of strength and come-back to defeat the Philistines is the stuff of legend. But, the story of Samson in other cultures may be a little or even a lot different.

Once the state of Israel was established again in the 1940s, for example, Samson was often adopted or used as a symbol of Israeli strength and courage in the face of adversity. Books were written where the character played a pivotal role as a new Israeli. It was also quite common for the military of the country to name troop units, missions and equipment after Samson. You can also find references to Samson in other cultures that may have a less biblical connection than this.

This character, for example, is an ancient historical folk figure in Spanish mythology in the Basque region of the country. As with other countries, this version of Samson in other cultures may not be exactly the same as the biblical character. Although this Samson shares many characteristics (i.e. size and strength) with the character in the bible, he is more of a pagan hero here than a Christian one.

As with other depictions of Samson in other cultures, the Basque Samson is still incredibly strong. He lives an almost hermit like existence in the Basque mountains and is described as being of giant-like stature. The Basque people claim that it was Samson’s strength that placed the huge rock formations and mountains in the area which he cast there with effortless throws from his cave home.

Some depictions of Samson in other cultures have lost virtually all of their Christian connections and have become part of a broader tradition. It is, for example, quite common for giant puppet like creations to be used in the so-called Samson parades in Austria. A collection of villages in the country hold these parades annually. They all revolve around an over-sized Samson figure. You’ll also see this character in the Ducasse Festival in Ath in Belgium. This festival involves a parade of a range of giant figures, including Samson.
